Dr Nick Loman

Nick Loman works as a bioinformatician on the xBASE project in Professor Mark Pallen's Research Group.

His research interest is the application of high-throughput sequencing to the study of bacterial pathogens causing outbreaks in hospitals and in the community, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Nick is enthusiastic about the use of Internet communication in Science and Medicine and writes a popular blog Pathogens: Genes and Genomes as well as maintaining a Twitter feed.

In 2009, Nick created an interactive map of high-throughput sequencing instruments.

Nick grew up in Brighton and learnt to program as a child. He trained as a medic at Barts and the London and Imperial College, gaining his MBBS and a BSc. Before joining the Pallen group, he was a junior doctor in the NHS for 3 years.

In his spare time, Nick enjoys cooking and computer games. He keeps an infrequently updated personal blog. With his brother Rupert, he founded Eurogamer.net, the largest independent gaming website in Europe.
